Help, guidance and technical support
Your contacts for industrial fastening systems
EJOT’s advanced fastening systems are found in countless industrial and engineering assemblies around the world. Click below for sales and technical support from one of our experienced team. We conduct inspections and observations onsite, in addition to providing help and advice direct from our UK manufacturing centre.
High strength sheet metal joints
Today’s demands on fastening technology are greater than ever, especially in the fast-moving automotive industry where the used components have to withstand high stress. Car body construction, for example, increasingly uses composite design where different materials have to be fastened securely and lastingly. In such applications, one-sided accessibility and the removability of the fastener is also very important, particularly with regard to recyclability. These complex conditions require innovative solutions like the EJOT FDS® screw, which fastens thin sheet metals made of steel and aluminium without the need for a pilot hole to an excellent quality standard. And due to the increased thread engagement in the formed draught, a high-strength joint is created without the issue of metal chipping. The result is a screw joint that is able to transfer high pull-out as well as shearing forces.
Rapid assembly without holes
With EJOT FDS®, joining processes are faster and more efficient because work steps such as pre-drilling or pre-punching are no longer necessary. Through the optimisation of the fastener layout, the joining of a body-in-white in space frame structure can be carried-out completely without pre-drilling. Here, the fastening parameters, where adjusted, and the geometry of the FDS® screw below the screw head are optimised, to accommodate the small amount of the material that flows against the fastening direction. It is a design that means the clearance hole no longer needs to take up the displaced material as this is now absorbed by the increased space below the FDS® screw head. It is a six-stage process – warming up, penetration of the material, forming of the through draught, thread forming, full thread engagement and tightening.
Fastening tool selection support
Flow drilling, thread-forming and tightening of the screw require a high torque which means a higher screwdriver speed and a defined end load is needed for installation. Suitable screwdrivers have been developed by a number of different manufacturers in conjunction with EJOT®. It is important to make sure you choose the most suitable tool for your application from those available. The FDS® product management team will provide technical assistance here, including by helping you to determine the selection criteria through assembly tests in the EJOT® APPLITEC laboratory.
FDS® Application Check
The EJOT FDS® is a flow drilling screw for high-strength sheet metal joints, which is used without component preparations like drilling or punching. Using our online tool, the FDS® Application Check, you can determine the relevant benchmarks for the screwing task by specifying the sheet metal components to be joined. These benchmarks include the required pressure force, as well as a recommendation for tightening torque for various surfaces. Additional comments about the feasibility of the joints help you to make informed decisions and complete the tool.

FDS® flow-drill screw assembly with additional sealing function
A pre-assembled embossed aluminium sealing washer provides an under-head seal of this special version of the FDS® screw. Current applications in e-mobility are particularly suitable for this screw in areas such as battery box fastening, where the sealing washer is needed to prevent water ingress. The waterproofing function (1m water column / 24H) is achieved by the sealing surface of the aluminium washer. Pre-drilling of the clamping part is necessary for this application.
The diameter of the underside of the washer is smaller in size than the clamping part hole, ensuring it is outside of the sealing area. Due to the automated feeding, the sealing washer has to be 1mm smaller in dimension than the head diameter. The captive washer is assembled fully automated, but it remains rotatable.
